Resident Trainer- Bud Lyon

Bud Lyon isn’t your typical horse trainer.
The Orange County, California native has a four-year college degree in Animal Science from Cal-Poly State University in San Luis-Obispo.

And, while many horse trainers “always knew” what their profession would be, Lyon wasn’t certain horse training was really for him until after college. At one point, he even considered a career in journalism.

But, as time went on, Lyon came to realize that there was a void in his life – his horses. As a youth, Bud came up through the ranks of 4-H horse shows and American Quarter Horse Youth Association competition.

He was dedicated – driving two hours to trainer Todd Crawford’s place, who was then based in California, three or four days a week after school to practice. Summers were spent living on the Crawford’s couch, working and learning alongside an industry legend.

Before he headed off to his first year of college, Lyon spent the summer in Arizona with trainer Randy Paul, preparing for the AQHYA Youth World Show. Lyon culminated his experience with a Reserve Championship in the Reining. After that, he thought about training horses full-time, but his parents quickly brought him back to reality.

His first two years in college, Lyon spent time riding and working for Don Murphy, and with Murphy’s guidance, won an AQHA Amateur World Championship in Reining in 1998.

Bud fininished his Animal Science degree at Cal-Poly, and also got a minor in Ag Business. Degree in hand, Bud was ready and willing to take on a career that was challenging and fun. By the time he’d graduated, Bud had his mind made up – he was going to be a horse trainer.

Bud went to work for trainers Craig Schmersal and then Randy Paul. He spent six years with Randy at Rancho Oso Rio before branching out on his own in January of 2008.

While Bud spent most of 2008 based in Scottsdale, Ariz., he realized that he was going to have to make some changes, so he began looking to the heart of horse country – Texas.

“I really loved Scottsdale, and it was a great place to be, but I needed to do something else and Texas held a lot of opportunities for me.”

So he packed his bags, said good-bye to Arizona, and headed east – destination, the Star Ranch, Aubrey, Texas. Bud began working at Star Ranch, owned by Sherry and Allen Adams, in Oct. 2008.

“I’m very excited to be training out of the Star Ranch, and I look forward to working with the owners, Sherry and Allen Adams,” Bud said.

Bud will be riding the Adams’ horses in addition to taking in both reining and cow horse prospects for training, and working with non pro clients. To contact Bud, e-mail bud@txstarranch.com, or call (480) 620-5686.
